The first form of traffic calming in Preston village was created ’accidentally’. Vehicles from the old Salvatori depot in Grove Road travelling along The Street slowed traffic due to their size and speed. Secondly, the installation of bollards placed outside Preston village store designed to protect pedestrians, plus the parked vehicles in front of the store, also forced vehicles to slow down at this point.
The first attempt at planned traffic calming in Preston village was the installation of a
Build-out at the north end of the village near to Preston Nursery. Although Preston Parish Council presented its preferred options to KCC, it had no choice as to the final location and layout. The work was paid for by the developer of Preston Grange as part of the S106 agreement. The current consensus amongst residents is that it has a limited impact on slowing traffic through the village. In September 2018 the Parish Council approached KCC with a proposal to install flashing
Speed Indicator Devices throughout the village. They notify drivers of their speed and help to make them more aware of potential hazards in the area and the appropriate speed at which they should be travelling.
Following a comprehensive review by Toby Donlon of KCC he informed us that the road layout through the village was not suitable for this purpose. Click on the above link (shown in bold) to read Toby Donlon’s report.
The
Village Gateway at the south end of the village has been redesigned and is to be rebuilt in an attempt to slow vehicles travelling northbound before they enter the residential areas. The reason for this redesign is that upon reaching the gateway into Preston village the speed limit of the road suddenly changes from 60 to 30mph. A recent speed count has shown that drivers approaching the gateway into Preston village (from the Wingham direction) rarely slow to 30mph before entering the village. This represents a real danger to pedestrians given the lack of safe pavements in this area.
In the new design, the existing 30mph speed limit signs will be put onto new posts and mounted behind the two gates. The existing (nearside) timber gate will be refurbished and painted white, and the existing 'PRESTON' village sign will be put onto this gate. A new white 5-bar gate on the offside will be installed together with a new 'PRESTON' village sign. To see a photograph of the current village gateway and a diagram showing the planned layout of the new gateway, please click on the above link (shown in bold). A new traffic survey will be scheduled after this work has been completed.
The
Village Gateway at the north end of Preston has recently been redesigned and moved following the building of Preston Grange, in line with the Highways Improvement Plan. It is designed to slow vehicles before they enter the residential areas but its success has yet to be tested. To see a photograph of the new layout please click on the above link (shown in bold)
Any proposal to install
Speed humps throughout Preston village would be a controversial issue and has been discussed and rejected several times over the years. To read a review of the pros and cons of this method of traffic calming, please click on the above link (shown in bold).
